António Pedro Lopes
From Sweet and Tender
Portuguese independent performer and performance maker Antonio Pedro Lopes was born in the Islands of the Azores in 1981. He's presently nomadic and works internationally.
He holds a degree in Theater Studies, University of Evora and a professional diploma in Choreography from Forum Danca, Porto 2005-2006. He studied musical theater at Capital Academy of Performing Arts in Santa Fe, NM, USA and several scholarships have taken him to New York City, Milan, Lisbon, Paris and Vienna to continue his studies in dance and theater.
Since 1998, he's performed in several theater and dance productions with artists Miguel Pereira, Jérôme Bel,João Fiadeiro, Tommy Noonan, Virgule Performing Arts Company, Marco Berrettini among many others.
His own performance works are .............................(Lisboa 2004); entre tanto(Porto 2006), desculpa não ter dito anda antes e não dizer nada agora, é que faz muito tempo que não digo nada a ninguém (Guimarães 2006), GO SOLO! ( Porto 2007) and holding on to nothing with everything i've got(Porto 2008)."I WANT MORE FANS, YOU WANT MORE STAGE!" a performance collaboration with Guilherme Garrido was premiered at Festival da Fábrica in Porto (2008).
His work feels to him episodic as of part of a larger feature, it is maybe why it feels to him as rather and always unfinished. It exists in the edge of his undisciplined formation, deformation and un-definition. The space of the theater is turned into a paradoxical arena in which he tests re-writing his autobiography and turning the experience of a vagabond life into fiction.
He's been teaching research workshops in Portugal, France, Switzerland and Holland in several different institutions and contexts.
After participating in Skite/S&T PAF 2007, Antonio shared the artistic direction of S&T/Skite Porto 2008 with Guilherme Garrido and Jean Marc Adoplhe and curated Conclusions for the Future with Marianne Baillot in Espaço do Tempo, Montemor-o-Novo, Portugal.
UPCOMING!
He presently develops LIGHTS ON DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE HOME a new collaboration with American dancer| editor Monica Gillette to premiere in September 2010. Also in 2010, he reworks "desculpa não ter dito nada antes e não dizer nada agora, é que faz muito tempo que não digo nada a ninguém", collaborates with Marianne Baillot on a new performance (for 2011) and starts a project with Brazilian artist Gustavo Ciríaco. He plans to go back to school soon. He looks for home.
In 2010 he's an artist in residence in the following institutions: La Caldera, Barcelona; O Espaço Do Tempo, Montemor-o-Novo; Bamboo Studio, Taipei; Devir-CAPA, Faro, Portugal.
