A single red thread, 60 meters in length, fills a room. The thread cuts at sharp angles, forming lines and geometric planes in space. At each of its corners and turns, a small piece of black tape fixes the thread to some point on the room’s surface.
At each end of the thread is a small home-made motor, unplugged. A single stage light rests on the floor, illuminating only the thread and the bare walls of the room. While the public enters, one dancer is making final adjustments to the thread before sitting motionless for several moments, observing the space and allowing the public to fall silent.
The dancer then sets the machine in motion.
He plugs both motors into the wall – they begin turning to pull in the string, which slowly frees itself from the black tape, one point at a time. He plays Vivaldi’s Sposa son Disprezzata on a small radio. He watches the entire event unfold on the stage with him, and only collects the black tape as the string is pulled from it.
Everything moves at the same slow, deliberate pace of the motors. Space shifts carefully and surprisingly around the dancer. The whole performance and all of the events unfold even before they occur, yet something unexpected always occurs. Everything is transparent. The dancer exists only to facilitate the perfect functioning of the whole machine.
This process continues until the string is entirely wrapped around the two motors, pulling them together into a final kiss. At this moment, the music and the lights are cut. The performance can last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes depending on context.
